LEGAL 3D GEL PLATES
Are 3D gel number plates legal?
3D gel number plates can be legal in the UK, provided the whole plate meets the legal number plate requirements. GOV.UK confirms that number plates can have 3D raised characters, but the characters must not be removable or reflective. Plates fitted after 1 September 2021 must also use characters that are a single shade of black.
Road legal replacement plates fitted after 1 September 2021 must also meet BS AU 145e requirements. That means the plate must include the correct British Standard marking, supplier identification and supplying outlet details, as well as using the correct reflective background and compliant character layout.
A 3D gel plate with illegal spacing, coloured characters, shaded lettering, carbon effects, tinted backgrounds or missing markings may not be road legal. Quick Plates only supplies road legal number plates with compliant spacing, required markings and clear single shade black characters.
3D gel plates are a great choice if you want something smarter than a standard printed plate but slightly more subtle than a thicker 4D acrylic plate. They look polished without shouting too loudly — the dinner jacket of number plates, if you will.
